Smith Journal

From 2017 to 2020 I was the editor of Smith Journal, a quarterly magazine about design, science, art—basically, if I found something interesting, I wrote about it (or got someone else to). The magazine was nice to look at, though people tell me they read it for the articles as well.

As editor it was my job to come up with story ideas, work with writers to craft them, and brief illustrators and photographers to give the whole thing visual form. I worked with our design team to lay everything out, led the marketing strategy to promote each issue, juggled budgets, and worked with the ad sales team to ensure the right brands graced our high-gsm, low-gloss pages.

At various times I was also Smith Journal’s online editor and social media manager. I’d publish blog posts and newsletters, and keep the conversation going on Instagram and Facebook.

That said, Smith Journal was primarily a print publication, which is why so little of it exists online. In 2020 we published our final issue (turns out you could only buck the digital trend for so long). You can read my final editor’s letter here.
